Okay, so you’ve decided – after much careful analysis – that it’s time to try crowdfunding as the way to fund your self-publishing efforts. Congrats! It’s scary to put yourself out there, but can be so rewarding.
As you prepare to put your campaign together, remember that now is the time to be deliberate and thoughtful. Your crowdfunding efforts require a systematic, well-mapped out approach if they are going to succeed. And the first thing you need to map out is your value proposition… and how to articulate it (on video!).
This is where many would-be crowdfunders get caught up. Launching a Kickstarter or Indie GoGo project is an investment of time and research… and maybe money. Because you need a video that attractively, succinctly tells people WHY they should fund your project. For many, this is going to be their lone introduction to your project, so you need to make it as compelling as possible.
How do you do that? Start by answering questions!
- Who are you?
- Why are you qualified to do this?
- What, exactly, are people getting out of supporting your campaign?
- Have you written the book? If not, when will it be done?
- Who do you have on your editorial team?
- What book packager or book shepherd do you plan to work with?
- What are you plans for stretch goals? (even just a short teaser!)
Second, remember to say thanks in advance.
Third, once you have all of this info in mind, it’s time to write an actual script. While you don’t want to come across as too rigid, it’s important to know what you’re going to say and practice it enough that you sound confident and inviting.
Finally, if this is all overwhelming, it’s time to think about bringing in a professional video editor to help you through the process. Remember, this is your introduction to the project, so make it shine.
What do you look for in a Kickstarter video?
